मात्र रसा स्वत:ला सर्वश्रेष्ठ समजत असल्याने तिने सरमेची विनंती धुडकावली. रसासारखी वेगवान नदी असूनही सरमेने जराही न डगमगता तिच्यात उडी मारली आणि धैर्याने दुसऱ्या तीरावर पोहोचली. तिथे पोहचल्या नंतर सुद्धा गायी शोधणे सोपे नव्हते. तरीसुद्धा सरमेने चिकाटीने गोधनाचा शोध लावला. इंद्राकडे परतताना पणींनी तिला लालूच दाखवली, तिची निंदा केली. पण सरमेने त्यांना दाद दिली नाही. मार्गात आलेल्या सर्व अडचणींना नेटाने तोंड देऊन सरमेने आपले कर्तव्य बजावले.

हे ऐकताच पणी खवळले आणि सरमेचा अपमान केला. सरमा ही मांस खाते असा अपप्रचार केला. यामुळे सरमेचे मनोबल बळेल, असे पणींना वाटले, मात्र अविचल कार्यनिष्ठा असलेली सरमा पणींकडे दुर्लक्ष करून निघाली.

प्राण्यांच्या चातुर्यकथा, नीतीकथा जगभरातील साहित्यात खूप प्रसिद्ध आहेत. रामायणातसुद्धा सागरी सेतू बांधण्यासाठी श्रीरामाला मदत करणाऱ्या खारीची गोष्ट येते. सरमा नामक कुत्रीची, तिच्या अविचल स्वामिनिष्ठेची कथा प्रसिद्ध आहे. पूर्वी यणी नामक असुरांनी देवांचे गोधन चोरले. ते शोधण्यासाठी सुपर्ण गरुडास देवांनी पणींच्या देशात पाठवले मात्र पणींनी सुपर्णाला लाच देऊन आपल्याकडे वळवले त्यामुळ देवांना गोधनाविषयी माहिती मिळाली नाही.

देवांनी या कामी सरमा नावाच्या कुत्रीला पाठवले. मार्गात येणाऱ्या वेगवान रसा नदीला ओलांडून, पणींच्या देशात निर्भयतेने शोध घेऊन सरमेने गोधन शोधले. पणींच्या लोभाला बळी न पडता सरमेने इंद्राला सर्व वृत्तांत सांगितला. कामात यशस्वी झालेल्या सरमेला इंद्राने वर दिला तर द्रोही गरुडाला शाप. सरमा ही कुत्री असूनही कार्यनिष्ठा, स्वामिनिष्ठा, धैर्य, स्वाभिमान या गुणांच्या जोरावर आदर्श ठरली तिच्या या कर्तृत्वाचे वर्णन पं. प्रभाकर भातखंडे यांनी संस्कृत पोवाड्यातून केले आहे. पोवाडा हा महाराष्ट्रातील लोककलाप्रकार असून त्यात वीररसाचे महत्त्वाचे स्थान आहे. शूरांच्या गाथा सांगण्यासाठी पोवाड्याची रचना केली जाते.

Functions of Central Bank:
The functions of central bank differ from country to country in accordance with the prevailing economic conditions. But some functions which are commonly performed by the central banks in all the countries are :

→ Issue of Currency Notes: The central bank has been authorised to print and issue currency notes. The RBI enjoys the monopoly of note issue of all denominations except one rupee note. The one rupee note and coins are issued by the Ministry of Finance of the Government of India but their distribution is undertaken by RBI.

→ Banker to the Government: The central bank acts as (A) a banker, (B) an advisor, and (C) an agent to the government. It performs all those functions which commercial banks perform for their customers.

Multiple Credit Creating Process of Commercial Banks:
Commercial banks accept deposits called primary deposits from the public. These deposits form the basis of all credit creation activities. A part of these deposits are kept as reserve by the bank to meet the demand for cash by the depositor. This is termed as minimum cash reserve.

The balance over the minimum cash reserve which is used by the banks to create credit by way of providing loans is known as derivative deposits. When a bank grants loan to a borrower, bank opens a deposit account in the name of the borrower and credit the loan amount in this account. This is called derivative deposit. Borrower can withdraw money from this account by means of cheque.

When the borrower withdraws money from his loan account by a cheque, it is deposited by the payee in some other bank. These banks again create credit on the basis of fresh deposits received after keeping the required reserves. In this way commercial bank creates credit money which is the part of total money supply. So commercial banks are also known as manufacturers of money. The amount from repaid loans can be further used to sanction additional loans. This process is called as multiple credit creation.

Co-operative Banks:
Co-operative Credit Societies is Act of 1904 led to formation of co-operative banks. Presently registered under Co-operative Society Act, 1965. Their main function is to get the deposits from members and public and grant loans to farmers (even farmers who is not a member) and small industrialist in both rural and urban area.

The co-operative credit sector comprises of co-operative credit institutions such as primary co-operative credit societies, district central co-operative bank and state co-operative banks.

Development Financial Institutions (DFI’S): Development financial institutions are agencies that provides medium and long term financial assistance and are engaged in promotion and development of industry, agriculture and other key sectors.

Indigenous Bankers:
They are financial intermediaries which operates on similar line to banks. They deal in short term credit instruments like hundi (Indigenous bill of exchange). The rate of interest differ from one market to another and from one bank to another. They do not depend on deposits entirely, they may also use their own funds.

They provide loans directly to trade and industry and to agriculturists through money lenders and traders.
They are the important source of fund due to inadequate banking facilities, simple and flexible nature of their operations, their informal approach and personal contacts, prompt services and availability of timely funds.

Money Lenders:
Moneylenders are predominant in villages. However, they are also found in urban areas. Interest rates are generally high. Large amount of loans are given for unproductive purposes. The operation of money lenders are prompt, informal and flexible. The borrowers are generally agricultural labourers, marginal and small farmers, artisans, factory workers, small traders, etc. Due to exploitative nature of money lenders, their activities are presently restricted by RBI.

Unregulated Non-bank Financial Intermediaries:
It consist of Chit funds, Nidhis, Loan Companies and others.

→ Chit funds: They are saving institutions. The members make regular contributions to the fund. The collected fund is given to some member based on previously agreed criterion (by bids or by draws). Chit funds are more famous in Kerala and Tamilnadu.

→ Nidhis: The deposits from the members are the major source of funds and they make loans to members at reasonable rate of interest for the purpose of construction of house, repairs, etc. They are highly localized to South India.

→ Loan Companies: They are called finance companies. Their total capital consists of borrowings, deposits and owned funds. They offer high rate of interest along with other incentives to attract deposits. A part is invested in banks in the form of fixed deposits and the rest is used to grant loans. Their activities are mainly confined to traders, small scale industries and self-employed person. Loans are given at a very high rate of interest.

Reorganisation of States:
New states were formed in India

→  Chhattisgarh: Fazal Ali Commission rejected the demand. Later by the initiative of, Government of India the state of Chhattisgarh was created on 1st November 2000.

Major Psychological Disorders:
Anxiety Disorders:
The word ‘anxiety’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Anxietas’ which means ‘uneasy or troubled mind’. Anxiety refers to a condition in which the person feels worried and uneasy for a long time for no obvious reasons.
The main anxiety disorders are:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder:
The person frequently experiences anxiety more intensely so that it starts interfering with the ability to perform daily tasks. Symptoms include irritability, headaches, insomnia, dizziness, breathlessness, etc.

Phobic disorders:
The word ‘phobia’ is derived from the Greek word ‘Phobos which was used to refer to the God of Fear. A phobia is an intense, persistent but irrational and disproportionate fear of a specific object or situation. DSM classifies phobias as simple phobias, e.g., Acrophobia, Claustrophobia etc., and social phobias, e.g., fear of speaking or eating in public.

Depressive Disorders:
Depression is an emotional state typically marked by sadness and guilt, feelings of anxiety and hopelessness. Other symptoms include loss of appetite, interest and sleep, fatigue, sexual dysfunction and suicidal thoughts.

Bipolar Disorders:
Bipolar disorder is also known as Manic Depressive disorder. The person experiences alternate phases of two states viz. mania, i.e., extreme excitement and elation and depression, i.e., extreme irritability, hopelessness and sadness. Main causative factor are genetic factors and imbalance in neurotransmitters such as dopamine, epinephrine, etc.

Trauma And Stress-Related Disorders:
Stress is inevitable in life. Daily hassles, relationship issues, frustration, chronic illness, etc., lead to stress. If stress is in moderate intensity, it acts as a motivation. However, intense and prolonged stress impairs normal functioning of the individual and may lead to stress disorders.

The two types of stress disorders are –
Acute Stress Disorder (ASD):
If a person (aged 6 years and above) has experienced extremely stressful situations like death of a loved one, serious disease or injury, sexual abuse, natural disasters, etc., then he/she may experience ASD.

The symptoms of ASD include –

  • emotional numbness and instability
  • nightmares and sleep distturbances
  • insomnia, lack of concentration, irritability and guilt feelings
  • depression

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):
If symptoms of ASD continue for more than one month with the same intensity, the person is diagnosed with PTSD.

A person who has suffered trauma generally goes through three stages viz.-

  • Shock stage – the individual is in shock, i.e., extremely disturbed.
  • Suggestible stage – he/she may seek guidance from others and may either accept these suggestions unquestioningly or may get extra sensitive.
  • Recovery stage – the person shows signs of recovery.
    However, some persons still show signs of mental illness i.e., PTSD.

The symptoms of PTSD include –

  • nightmares, flashbacks, severe anxiety
  • hypervigilance and avoidance of situations that bring back the trauma
  • irritability, social isolation

Addictive disorders refer to the physical and psychological inability to stop consuming some substance or indulging in some activity although it is harmful. This includes dependence on drugs, nicotine, alcohol, etc., or activities like gambling, eating, gaming, etc. Drug addiction refers to an inability to control the use of alcohol, nicotine, narcotics, marijuana, medications, etc.

Symptoms of addiction are –

  • Excessive consumption of drugs or alcohol and inability to reduce the dosage.
  • In case the person tries to stop the drug use, then withdrawal symptoms occur which include sweating, tremors, muscle pain, goosebumps, etc.

The term ‘Schizophrenia’ is derived from Greek words Schizein (to split) and phren (mind). It was coined in 1911 by a Swiss psychologist, Paul Eugene Bleuler. Thus, the literal meaning of the word ‘schizophrenia’ is split mind. It is a psychotic disorder.

According to DSM-5 the two types of symptoms for schizophrenia are:

  • Positive symptoms,
  • Negative symptoms.

Positive symptoms are an excess addition to normal thoughts or behaviour of the period. Such symptoms are –

  • hallucinations – mainly auditory and visual hallucination
  • delusions – mainly of grandeur, reference and persecution
  • disorganized thought and speech
  • bizarre body movements and disorganized behaviour
  • incongruent affect.

Negative symptoms are deficits of normal emotional responses or of thought processes. They lead to low level of functioning and may not improve much even with treatment.

This includes –

  • emotional blunting – diminished emotional expression
  • anhedonia – inability to experience deep positive emotions
  • alogia – diminished speed
  • asociality – lack of desire to form relationships
  • avolition – lack of motivation
  • apathy.

Sometimes, a schizophrenic exhibits positive as well as negative symptoms.

Signs that help to identify individuals who require expert (professional) help in mental health are called ‘red flags’. Symptoms, if present, in any person should satisfy three requirements

The signals indicating a need for professional help are:

  • inability to concentrate or to sleep well.
  • severe confusion and memory loss.

  • loss of interest in friends/ family/ activities.
  • odd statements or strange use of words.

Contribution of Sants:
Superstition and rituals ruled at large in medieval Indian society. People had become fatalistic and inert. The condition of the common people was miserable. These were the times when the saints in Maharashtra made efforts to bring the masses back to life. In Maharashtra, the tradition of saints, which began with Chakradhar Swami, Sant Namdev, Sant Dnyaneshwar, Sant Eknath, Sant Tukaram, and Samarth Ramdas. It was continued by sants coming from various strata of the society.

Foundation and Expansion of Swarajya:
In the first half of the 17th century, Nizamshahi and Adilshahi had established their rule in Maharashtra. Many eminent Maratha sardars flourished under their rule. They held Jahagirs in the remote regions of the Sahyadris. The difficult terrain of Sahyadri allowed them to operate independently. Shahajiraje Bhosale was a prominent Sardar in the Nizamshahi kingdom. After the end of Nizamshahi’s rule, he accepted the rank of a Mansabdar in the Adilshahi court.

The concept of Swarajya was visualized by Shahajiraje and it was turned into reality by Chh. Shivaji Maharaj. Chh. Shivaji Maharaj laid the foundation of Swarajya from the Mawal region. Several factors like the topography of Maharashtra, valour of the local Mawalas, the administrative and military experience gained by the Maratha sardars while working with Nizamshahi, and Adilshahi and above all these the able leadership of Chh. Shivaji Maharaj could make it possible.

Chh. Shivaji Maharaj had anticipated the intentions of Afzalkhan, who had taken up the challenge of killing Chh. Shivaji Maharaj. He met Afzalkhan at Pratapgad. As expected Afzalkhan attempted treachery but Chh. Shivaji Maharaj was well prepared and killed Afzalkhan in self-defense. Afzalkhan’s huge army was set on the run and huge booty and weapons were collected left behind by them. This made Swarajya’s treasury richer.

Maratha War of Independence:
After the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was coronated as the King of Swarajya. During his reign, a constant conflict continued with the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb’s rebellious son Akbar had established friendly relations with Sambhaji Maharaj. Enraged by this Aurangzeb came down to Deccan along with a huge army and able sardars, who were veterans of warfare. For the next 25 years, he camped in Maharashtra and fought against the Marathas.

After Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj took over the reins at Raigad. Aurangzeb sent Zulfikar Khan to seize the fort of Raigad. Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj, Maharani Tarabai, Maharani Yesubai (Queen of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj) and her son Prince Shahu were staying at Rajgad.

After the death of Rajaram Maharaj (March, 1700 C.E.), his wife Maharani Tarabai continued to fight against Aurangzeb. Maharani Tarabai led the Swarajya movement under extremely unfavourable conditions. She single-handedly took charge of the administration and fought for Swarajya for twenty-five years with the help of her sardars.

Administrative System established by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj:
The regions in Maharashtra including Nashik, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Sindhudurga, Ratnagiri, Raigad; Belgaum, Karwar, Dharwad in Karnataka; some regions of Andhra, Jinji and Vellore in Tamil Nadu comprised Swarajya. Chh. Shivaji Maharaj set up an ideal administrative system for the smooth running of Swarajya’s affairs.

The formation of the Ashtapradhan Mandal (council of eight ministers) and its growth took place along with the expansion of the kingdom. After coronation, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj created special posts of Ashtapradhans. It included ‘Peshwa’, ‘Amatya’, ‘Sachiv’, ‘Mantri’, ‘Senapati, ‘Sumant’, ‘Nyayadhish’ and ‘Panditrao’.

There was a special officer called ‘Darakdar’ appointed to look after every department of the ministry. Other officers were ‘Diwan’ (Secretary) ‘Majumdar’ (Auditor and Accountant). ‘Phadnis’ (Deputy Auditor), ‘Sabnis’ (Office in-charge), ‘Karkhanis’ (Commissary), ‘Chitnis’ (Correspondence Clerk), ‘Jamdar’ (Treasurer), ‘Potdar’ (Assay Master) etc.

Release of Shahu Maharaj:
The Mughals continued their efforts to defeat the Marathas, even after the death of Aurangzeb. For that purpose they adopted the strategy of dividing the Marathas. They released Shahu Maharaj from captivity in 1707 C.E. After his release there was a conflict between Maharani Tarabai and Shahu Maharaj. Shahu Maharaj won the ensuing battle. Balaji Vishwanath played an important role on behalf of Shahu Maharaj and later he was appointed as Peshwa.

Peshwa Period:
After Balaji Vishwanath, his son, Bajirao I was appointed as the Peshwa. He expanded the Maratha empire upto Malwa, Rajasthan and Bundelkhand. He defeated the Nizam. After Bajirao I, Balaji Bajirao alias Nanasaheb was appointed as the Peshwa. Madhavrao Peshwa tried to re-establish the Maratha power. The defeat in Panipat was not just a political defeat but it also lowered the morale of the Marathas greatly.

Madhavrao Peshwa tried to elevate the spirits of Marathas as well as re-establish the Maratha power in the north. The Marathas were successful in overcoming the great defeat at Panipat and create a politically strong position for themselves in the politics of the north.
Malharrao was the founder of the Holkar State at Indore. He served the Maratha power for a long time.

The wooden stands of the pothis have paintings of various deities such as Ganapati, Riddhi-siddhi, Ramapanchayatana, Gopalkrishna, Vishnulakshmi in dark red, green and yellow colours. The miniature paintings include human portraits and themes like raga mala, talamala, processions etc.

Architecture: Chh. Shivaji Maharaj gave priority to build forts. The tradition of building forts was prevalent in the Deccan in the last three centuries. This tradition proved to be of advantage to Chh. Shivaji Maharaj. The required expertise of maintaining forts was easily available to him. The Kasaba temple in Pune and Vitthal temple in Vitthalwadi were reconstructed by Veermata Jijabai.

During the Peshwa period, the Maratha kingdom regained its prosperity and all forms of art and architecture once again received patronage. Pune, Satara and Nashik developed into big cities. These cities had well-paved roads, wadas on both sides of the road and arched gates at intervals. The construction of temples began on a large scale during the later Peshwa period.

These temples were of three types. Examples of the temple architecture of this period are found at Saswad (‘Vateshwar’, ‘Sangameshwar’), Mahuli (‘Vishweshwar’), Jejuri etc. These are huge in size.

Literature: Marathi literature developed greatly during this period. Sant Tukaram of this period was a poet of the Warkari sect. Samarth Ramdas wrote ‘Dasbodh’ and ‘Manache Shlok’ in Marathi. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj got the ‘Rajyavyavaharakosha’ prepared which was a compilation of Sanskrit lexicon for Persian terms.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was a great writer and Sanskrit scholar. The Sanskrit text ‘Budhabhushan’ was written by him. This text is an overview of ancient texts on polity. Apart from Sanskrit, he also knew many other languages. He wrote texts in Brij language namely ‘Nayikabhed’, ‘Nakhshikh’ and ‘Satasattak’.

Trade, industries and social life:
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was aware of the importance of a flourishing trade for the economic well-being of the state. He encouraged the traders and merchants by creating Peths (market places). ‘Shete’ and ‘Mahajan’ were the officers who supervised the transaction of these Peths. Chaul, Rajapur, Dabhol, Kelshi, Ratnagiri were some of the important ports and trade centres of this period.
Commodities like black pepper and lac etc. were exported from Dabhol. Silk, opium, and indigo were exported from Chaul. Black pepper, cardamom, cotton cloth were the items of trade in Rajapur.

Struggles before 1857

Revolt of Bhils:

→ In 1818, the British East India Company took complete charge of Khandesh.
